We Hold These Truths
As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it is a good time to pause and reflect on the words that were signed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
What follows is a long list of actions that the King of England took to prevent local action of the people, by the people, for the people, making it impossible for those living in the colonies to have any real say in their own governance. We see people today who wonder if they have any say in the governance of their own community, state, and nation. What we celebrate today, though, is our independence from foreign rule and the many achievements we, as a nation, have accomplished over the past two and a half centuries.
As we look to the future, it is indeed important that we remember the best of our nation – the list is long and distinguished. We should be rightfully proud of these things, and celebrate them today at this important milestone in America’s history.
It is also important that we reflect on those areas in which we have fallen short. To only remember our greatest achievements does a grave disservice to future generations who must learn from our mistakes.
Considering all these truths will make us wiser and stronger as a nation. Holding these truths as self-evident will help to make us, as a people: “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
